SUMMARY:Mindful Awareness and Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to come out next Sunday at 10am and join us in the unhurried pace and full awareness of mindfulness on a walk in the preserve. If you’re new to it\, we will talk about how to practice mindfulness. Time spent in nature benefits our mood\, thinking\, and health\, according to many research studies.\nThe walk is designed for adults and older children (older than 10). While discussing and practicing mindfulness\, we will walk to a couple of locations within the preserve.\nWe can then take a little time to reflect on what is around us and within us\, writing or drawing in a nature journal. Doing this helps us organize our thoughts\, adds to our self-understanding\, and may benefit our mental wellness in other ways. Bring a notebook and pen and/or pencil!\nThe walk leader is Michael Smith\, author of Mindfulness in Texas Nature\, naturalist\, and retired mental health professional. (This event is for nature appreciation and wellness and is not therapy)

SUMMARY:A Wild DFW Hike with Amy Martin
DESCRIPTION:We’ll re-create the adventure chapter on Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve from “Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature Around Dallas-Fort Worth” (https://Wild-DFW.com/) with members of Friends of Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve. You’ve read about Eastern Cross Timbers in Wild DFW\, now experience the finest remnant of it in North Texas. The geology chapter of Wild DFW talks extensively about how our tilted layers of bedrock shape the landscape. Now walk that as you explore a cuesta limestone formation. \nA journalist and writer for over 40 years\, Amy Martin is the author of “Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature Around Dallas-Fort Worth” (Wild-DFW.com)\, and “Itchy Business: How to Treat the Poison Ivy and Poison Oak Rash\, Prevent Exposure and Eradicate the Plant” (Itchy.biz). She is currently senior features writer for Green Source DFW (GreenSourceDFW.org). Her current project is Ned Fritz Legacy (NedFritz.com)\, a biographical website of Ned Fritz\, Texas’ most famous environmentalist. For twelve years\, she managed wildlife habitat rehabilitation on a private nature preserve in northeast Texas\, including converting fifteen acres of pasture into tallgrass prairie. Find her writings at https://moonlady.com/. \nWe might post some observations to iNaturalist as Amy points out some of the places and species that she encountered during the walk that she wrote about for the book.

SUMMARY:Know Your Nature Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:In these sessions\, we walk parts of the preserve to find and document the plants\, animals\, and other living things. We use the citizen science app iNaturalist for this. Along the way\, we talk about what we are finding\, and we all learn more about the life of the preserve. You do not have to be an iNaturalist user or nature expert to join us.

SUMMARY:Third Annual Moth Night
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 National Moth Week is July 20-28 and to celebrate our nighttime pollinators the City of Arlington’s Stormwater Education Program and the Friends of Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve invite residents to the Arlington Citizen Science Program’s third annual Moth Night. We will be observing moths in their local habitat and learning about their role as pollinators in North Texas.\nThis year’s program is on Wednesday\, July 24 at 8:30 p.m. at the Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve\, 5201 Bowman Springs Road\, Arlington\, Texas 76017.\nMoths are important pollinators in North Texas. Many night-blooming plants rely on moths and other nighttime visitors to spread their pollen. Moths are among the most diverse and successful organisms on earth. It’s estimated that there are 150\,000 to more than 500\,000 species of moths! Shapes and sizes span from the size of a pinhead to as large as your hand and their colors and patterns vary from bright and vibrant to muted for camouflaged.\nThere will be multiple viewing stations set up near the amphitheater and along the walking trails where you will be able to observe\, take pictures and ask questions about our local moths and other nighttime insects. Our special guest speaker for the evening\, Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Urban Biologist Sam Kieschnick\, will provide interesting insight on moths and their importance to our local ecosystem.\nThere is limited parking space so please carpool if possible. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring water and a small flashlight but most of all bring your curiosity!\nFor more information visit www.arlingtontx\,gov/mothnight or contact the City of Arlington’s Stormwater Education Specialist\, Melissa Walker\, at 817-459-6572 or email stormwatereducation@arlingtontx.gov.
