SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:New Date!!! \nOn Sunday\, February 15 the Friends of Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve will host its 19th Great Backyard Bird Count.  The annual census brings together hundreds of thousands of environmentalists worldwide to take an avian health-care snapshot. How are our birds faring? \nThe final tally at Sheri Capehart last year was 205 birds counted and 41 different species\, above average over the 18 years. \nThe count is taken 8-10 a.m. Meet in the parking lot. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your cameras and binoculars. Download the Merlin app in advance so you can use your cellphone to track birds from their songs. \n7\,970 species were recorded worldwide last year.  That’s good  news: 50 higher than a year ago. The data is reported on eBird\, the world’s largest biodiversity-related participatory science project. Last year 642\,003 citizen scientists from 210 countries joined the count.

SUMMARY:What Lives Here?
DESCRIPTION:Say goodbye to winter and take a walk to find some of the living things at the preserve. We’ll focus largely on names for things\, how the plants and animals work together ecologically\, but some of the time we’ll focus on experiencing the preserve with mindful\, in-the-moment awareness.\n\nThe walk is designed for anyone interested in nature\, including beginners. It is for pre-teens on up through seniors but probably wouldn’t work for younger kids. Please do not bring dogs on this walk. Remember that the trails are primitive (but we go slow). Bring water!

SUMMARY:Frog Call Night
DESCRIPTION:On this Friday night during the City Nature Challenge\, we will take a walk at the preserve starting at 8pm and visit one or two of the ponds\, listening for frog calls. And along the way\, we can listen for owls\, watch for spiders weaving webs\, and be aware of anything else that is part of the community of living things. \nWe will be documenting what we find in iNaturalist\, adding to the total number of observations at the preserve (already over two thousand species have been identified). \nPlease register as “going” by emailing us at events@friendsofscnp.org or at our Facebook page if you plan to join us\, because we need to plan for how many will attend. Since we are starting at sunset\, it will not be very dark at first but will get darker – so please remember to bring a flashlight or headlamp. Also remember that the trails are primitive and walking carefully is more important in low light. \nThe preserve is open until 10pm\, so we will get back to the parking lot by about 9:30pm\, giving us enough time to wrap up and leave.

SUMMARY:Know Your Nature Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning during the City Nature Challenge\, we will take a walk at the preserve and look for flowers\, insects\, lizards hanging out in the trees\, the trees themselves\, and all the other wonderful lives at the preserve. We will be documenting what we find in iNaturalist\, adding to the total number of observations for City Nature Challenge. \nPlease register as “going” by emailing us at events@friendsofscnp.org or find the event on our Facebook page if you plan to join us\, because we need to plan for how many will attend. Remember to bring water! And a camera\, if you like. We will show you how to use iNaturalist on your smartphone if you are new to the app – or you could just walk with us without using iNaturalist. \nThe walk is planned from 9:00-10:30am. We sometimes run a little overtime\, but we’ll make sure you get back to the parking lot by 10:30 if you need to. And if you are recording observations for City Nature Challenge and want to keep going\, then you’re absolutely welcome to stay as long as you wish (until 10pm!).

SUMMARY:The Wild Lives of Texas' Reptiles & Amphibians
DESCRIPTION:The Wild Lives of Texas’ Reptiles & Amphibians \nFor those with a serious interest in these animals\, whether or not you have much experience or background. The content will have some depth without being very technical. Appropriate for nature enthusiasts\, Master Naturalists\, adults and teens. \nThis series of presentations focuses on the reptiles and amphibians of north Texas\, how they live in the wild\, how we can find and recognize them\, and how we can protect and conserve them. \nEach presentation uses PowerPoint to offer lots of photos\, offered via Zoom so that people can join from a variety of locations. Most presentations are 1.5 hours long with some time at the end for questions and answers. \nThe presentations are free and scheduled on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm\, every other Thursday. We encourage you to plan to attend the series (we will be adding each event date)\, but you can selectively attend one or more of them. The Zoom link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83930351943?pwd=UwMWySBAa467aZJ2d4W8aDPQmJUyQg.1 and the meeting ID: 839 3035 1943\, Passcode: 228084 \nThe presenter\, Michael Smith\, has field experience with these animals all over Texas and has written or co-authored two books on the subject (https://livesinnature.com/about/). \nThe sessions are as follows: \n4/30 – Part One: Getting Started \nWe will discuss what these animals are and introduce the topic of herpetology and things like scientific names and community science. We will also try to answer the question\, “what good are they?” We’ll also cover some essential skills in the field\, skills that can help participants find the animals safely. There are photos of a poison ivy\, bull nettle\, and our local venomous snakes. \n5/14 – Part Two: Amphibians \nWe’ll start with what makes a species an amphibian\, and the frogs\, toads\, and salamanders that represent this group in the U.S. The presentation offers photos of most of the species encountered in North Texas along with the calls of frogs and toads. We will talk about amphibian extinctions and the threats to their survival. \n5/28 – Part Three: Crocodilians and Turtles \nThese are the oldest reptiles in terms of evolution and paleontology. We will talk about our American alligator and its adaptation for aquatic life and get into the strange but successful structure of turtles and their shells. There are plenty of photos of most of our North Texas turtle species. We will discuss turtle conservation issues. \n6/11 – Part Four: Lizards and Snakes (two hours) \nWe will talk about the natural history of these species (why do some lizards’ tails break off\, and how do snakes move and swallow big food items?). Photos will illustrate representative species from each family\, including each of our venomous snakes. We also will discuss venomous snake bite. This presentation will be longer than the others\, probably until 9pm. \n6/25 – Part Five: Herp Conservation Challenges \nThese animals are facing severe conservation challenges. We will talk about how conservation scientists keep track of various species\, how federal and Texas state laws and policies may help protect them\, and we’ll take a good look at several representative Texas species. We will also take a look at how we\, as citizens and naturalists\, can help.
