SUMMARY:Bats of the Area and How to Find Them
DESCRIPTION:Local bat enthusiasts Ellen Ravkind and Anne Alderfer along with bat expert Kate Rugroden from the Bat World Sanctuary will provide our program at the preserve. Kate will talk about the bats in this area and the role the sanctuary plays in education and rehabilitation. Ellen and Anne will demonstrate the use of the echo location devices from Wildlife Acoustics (Echo Meter Touch 2).\n\nKate Rugroden is Director of Special Projects for the Bat World Sanctuary and is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator\, specializing in bats\, raccoons\, and opossums. To learn more www.batworld.org and www.bwmidcities-batworld.org. Dr. Ellen Ravkind is the Public Programs Manager/Environmental Educator at River Legacy Foundation/River Legacy Nature Center. Anne Alderfer is a part time Naturalist at River Legacy Park and a Master Naturalist.\n\nWe will meet in the amphitheater that overlooks the south pond. You might want to bring bug spray and water\, and a good flashlight or headlamp with fresh batteries for getting back to the parking lot at the end of the evening.

DESCRIPTION:We will walk to a couple of the ponds at sunset to see what we might see … and hear. Are any frogs calling? Spring is the best time\, but we may hear cricket frogs and possibly leopard frogs calling. We will pick a spot along the bank and stay very quiet for about 3 minutes to listen for calls. We may also see spiders spinning their webs and we might hear owls. \nPlease email events@friendsofscnp.org if planning to attend. Bring a FLASHLIGHT and water – and think about insect repellent before we get started. \nMeet in the parking lot. Weather Underground predicts it will still be 91F at 8pm\, with a “feels like” of 96.

We’ll take photos to document what we find using the nature app “iNaturalist” – you’re invited to do this as well (we will show you how if you’re new to it) but you certainly don’t have to.\nWe will meet in the parking lot and get started at 8:30am. This walk is for folks around 10 through adult – and if you have an older child (ten through teen\, if they’re interested in nature) that you want to bring\, a responsible adult must accompany them.

SUMMARY:Looking for Yucca Moths
DESCRIPTION:John and Grace Darling will lead us on a walk through SCNP with emphasis on finding blooming glen rose yuccas and active Yucca Moths\, but we will look for any creature that happens by and hope we can name a few. \nMale and female moths emerge from their cocoons in the spring\, timed with the blossoming of the yucca plant. There is an extraordinary partnership between the yucca moth and the yucca plant. They are so interdependent that one cannot live without the other. \nWear STURDY shoes or boots\, maybe bring BUG SPRAY and WATER\, and especially a good FLASHLIGHT or headlamp with fresh batteries. The walk back will be in the dark\, so a good light will be essential.

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve is hosting our 18th Great Backyard Bird Count. Come join us as we gather at 8 a.m. in the parking lot and fan out in small groups for the two-hour count. Bring binoculars\, appropriate clothing and be sure to download and use the Merlin birdsong identification app. It will help! \nChecklists submitted help researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, the National Audubon Society and Birds of Canada learn more about how birds are doing\, and how to protect them and the environment we share. Last year over 642\,000 citizen scientists worldwide submitted their bird observations online\, recording 7\,920 different species. \nAt the preserve last year 176 birds across 34 species were identified on a cold windy day. But while it sent some birds to ground\, others were out in force. An osprey appeared! The first ever for the count. The final tally was 176 birds counted\, representing 34 different species. This is about average over the past 17 years of GBBC counts at SCNP. \nAll skill levels welcome. We all learn by bird-watching with others.

You’ve read about Eastern Cross Timbers in Wild DFW\, now experience the finest remnant of it in North Texas. The geology chapter of Wild DFW talks extensively about how our tilted layers of bedrock shape the landscape. Now walk that as you explore a cuesta limestone formation. \nA journalist and writer for over 40 years\, Amy Martin is the author of “Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature Around Dallas-Fort Worth” (Wild-DFW.com)\, and “Itchy Business: How to Treat the Poison Ivy and Poison Oak Rash\, Prevent Exposure and Eradicate the Plant” (Itchy.biz). She is currently senior features writer for Green Source DFW (GreenSourceDFW.org). Her current project is Ned Fritz Legacy (NedFritz.com)\, a biographical website of Ned Fritz\, Texas’ most famous environmentalist. DESCRIPTION:Since the dedication of the Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve in 2013\, the Friends of SCNP has supported the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Arlington’s commitment to protect this unique site’s natural resources and provide opportunities for outdoor exploration\, nature appreciation and more. As a preserve\, it’s a great example of eastern Cross Timbers ecosystem\, characterized by woodlands\, savanna grasslands\, and enhanced by 4 ponds‚ providing a wide variety of habitats for diverse groups of wildlife. \nThe preserve is a designated site on TPWD’s Great Texas Wildlife Trails\, and the Pollinator Meadow has recently been designated as a Monarch Waystation. The Friends of SCNP host an annual Backyard Bird Count along with several other events at the Preserve\, focusing on the Preserve’s wildlife\, plants\, or history. Additionally\, the Friends host programs that cover topics relevant to the Preserve\, including wildlife\, natural resources\, ecology\, geology\, and history. The Preserve has been a favorite site for volunteers with UT Arlington’s Big Event\, and the Friends have sometimes shared projects with the nearby Fellowship Academy and with local scouting groups. \nDuring the entire month of September prior to North Texas Giving Day\, you can make your gift early through Early Giving! DESCRIPTION:The 2024 National Moth Week is July 20-28 and to celebrate our nighttime pollinators the City of Arlington’s Stormwater Education Program and the Friends of Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve invite residents to the Arlington Citizen Science Program’s third annual Moth Night. We will be observing moths in their local habitat and learning about their role as pollinators in North Texas.\nThis year’s program is on Wednesday\, July 24 at 8:30 p.m. at the Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve\, 5201 Bowman Springs Road\, Arlington\, Texas 76017.\nMoths are important pollinators in North Texas. Many night-blooming plants rely on moths and other nighttime visitors to spread their pollen. Moths are among the most diverse and successful organisms on earth. It’s estimated that there are 150\,000 to more than 500\,000 species of moths! Shapes and sizes span from the size of a pinhead to as large as your hand and their colors and patterns vary from bright and vibrant to muted for camouflaged.\nThere will be multiple viewing stations set up near the amphitheater and along the walking trails where you will be able to observe\, take pictures and ask questions about our local moths and other nighttime insects.
